How do I stop my cistern from leaking?

If you were a plumber you would know that the most common issue that Nottingham owners face every day is a leaking toilet cistern and the struggle to stop a cistern from leaking.
The cistern is the upper portion of every home’s favourite and most-used throne, containing the water which is ready to be flushed. It’s another term for a toilet’s water storage tank, and it often houses the flush button that links to the flush mechanism within.

5 Easy DIY Tips

Turn off the water

The first step to take is to turn off the water supply.  Begin with the shut-off valve at the toilet’s base, then proceed to the main supply. In this way, you will make sure that there is no water at your house.

Check the water level.

After carefully lifting the tank lid, check the level of water; if it is low, the leak is severe enough. If you experience the opposite when the water level is too high, it might indicate a problem with the float assembly or fill valve. To check for leaks, add a few drops of food colouring to the cistern water. Don’t flush; instead, wait to observe whether any colour seeps into the bowl.

Inspect the float assembly and fill valve.

Known as the ballcock assembly, you’re searching for apparent damage, misalignment, and malfunctioning components. Also, ensure the float travels freely and is not hindered by anything.

Addressing Cistern Leak

Examine the flapper valve at the bottom of the cistern, which controls the flow of water into the basin. Wear, damage, or misalignment might compromise the watertight seal. To verify its operation, flush the toilet and see if the flapper lifts entirely and settles appropriately. In addition, check the flush valve seal at the bottom of the cistern. If it is broken or degraded, water may flow into the bowl.

Cistern Connection

Between the cistern itself and the toilet bowl, you’ll see there are various plumbing connections. Make sure those connections are not loose, damaged or cracked.

Congratulations you made it! If you still have the same issue then it is time to call a specialist for assistance.
